Gym Star Apparel was never created because I wanted to start a clothing company. It was created because I was a lifter who couldn't find the type of apparel I wanted to wear.
Back in 2007, the fitness apparel landscape in Canada looked very different than it does today. Social media didn't exist in the way we know it now, online shopping was still gaining traction, and serious bodybuilders had very few options when it came to finding clothing that truly represented the lifestyle. Most athletic apparel was designed for the mainstream fitness crowd, and while there were certainly recognizable brands available, very little existed for those of us who lived and breathed the bodybuilding culture.
At the time, I was spending most of my free time in the gym. Training wasn't something I did for a few hours each week. It was part of who I was. Like many dedicated lifters, I wanted apparel that reflected the effort, discipline, and identity that came with the lifestyle. I wanted clothing that fit properly on athletic physiques, held up to years of training, and looked different from the generic options everyone else was wearing. The more I searched, the more I realized there was a significant gap in the Canadian market.
Rather than waiting for someone else to solve the problem, I decided to do it myself.
On August 15, 2007, Gym Star Apparel officially became a business. What began as a small side venture quickly gained momentum within the local bodybuilding community. I started by sourcing unique fitness apparel brands that were virtually unknown in Canada and selling them to local friends, fellow lifters, and competitors at bodybuilding events throughout Saskatchewan. The response was immediate because people were looking for the same thing I had been searching for: quality apparel built specifically for serious training.
As the business grew, I continued looking for brands that shared the same values I believed were important to lifters. I wasn't interested in trends or fashion for the sake of fashion. I was searching for quality, durability, authenticity, and products created by people who genuinely understood the gym lifestyle. That search eventually led me to a Swedish brand called GASP.
Today, discovering a new fitness apparel brand takes seconds. A quick scroll through Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, or Facebook can introduce you to thousands of companies. In 2007 and 2008, things were very different. There were no influencers promoting GASP, no sponsored athletes flooding social media feeds, and no viral marketing campaigns introducing the brand to North America. Finding brands like GASP required digging through bodybuilding forums, niche websites, and underground fitness communities where serious lifters shared information with one another.
The moment I discovered GASP, I knew it was different. The apparel was built specifically for lifters. The fabrics were heavier, the fits were designed around muscular physiques, and the brand represented the gritty, hardworking side of bodybuilding that often gets overlooked by commercial fitness companies. Shortly afterward, I discovered Better Bodies, another Swedish brand that shared many of the same values while offering apparel for a broader audience of dedicated fitness enthusiasts and athletes. Together, these brands embodied everything I believed Canadian lifters deserved access to.
That discovery would ultimately shape the future of Gym Star Apparel.
By 2008, we had established relationships with GASP and Better Bodies and launched our first online store, allowing us to serve customers across Canada. What started as a local operation in Regina, Saskatchewan quickly evolved into a growing national business serving serious lifters from coast to coast. As more Canadians discovered GASP Canada and Better Bodies Canada through Gym Star Apparel, our reputation continued to grow as a trusted source for authentic bodybuilding apparel, premium gym clothing, and products that couldn't easily be found elsewhere in the country.
The growth of our online business eventually led to another important milestone. In 2012, we opened the first Gym Star Pro Shop in Regina, Saskatchewan. For years, customers had been making special trips to see products in person, try on apparel, and experience the brands firsthand. The Pro Shop allowed us to create a destination shopping experience unlike anything else available to Canadian lifters at the time. It wasn't designed to be a traditional retail store. It was designed to be a place where people who lived the fitness lifestyle could connect with brands, products, and people who genuinely understood their passion for training.
Over the years, Gym Star Apparel became known for much more than simply selling clothing. We built relationships. We built trust. Most importantly, we built a community around people who shared a common mindset. The people who shop with us understand that discipline matters, that progress is earned through consistency, and that the gym represents something much deeper than physical appearance alone. Those values continue to guide every decision we make today.
As our vision expanded, so did our opportunities. Today, Gym Star Apparel operates inside Brickhouse Gym, our flagship fitness facility located at 1301 Osler Street in Regina, Saskatchewan. Bringing the Gym Star Pro Shop into Brickhouse Gym created the perfect environment for the brands we represent. Instead of simply shopping for apparel, visitors can experience the culture that inspired the business from the very beginning. Surrounded by serious training, world-class equipment, and a community built around self-improvement, the Pro Shop now exists exactly where it belongs, inside an environment that reflects the same standards and values our apparel represents.
While the fitness industry continues to evolve, our mission remains remarkably simple. We believe quality matters. We believe customer service matters. We believe authentic brands matter. Most importantly, we believe that lifters deserve apparel that reflects the commitment they bring to their training every day. That philosophy has allowed Gym Star Apparel to become one of Canada's most recognized destinations for GASP and Better Bodies apparel and has earned the trust of thousands of Canadian lifters over the past two decades.
Today, whether you're shopping from Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Halifax, or anywhere in between, our mission remains exactly the same as it was when we started: to provide serious Canadian lifters with premium fitness apparel, exceptional customer service, and access to brands that genuinely represent the bodybuilding and strength-training lifestyle.
Nearly twenty years after launching Gym Star Apparel, we still believe what we believed on day one. This isn't just clothing. It's a reflection of the lifestyle, discipline, and pride that come from pursuing something meaningful. For the people who train with purpose, push their limits, and refuse to settle for average, we're proud to be part of that journey.
